Origin of the Tiffany Lamp
Origin of the Tiffany Lamp
From: http://www.seriousblogging.com/fashionjewelryguide/
Tiffany lamps are some of the most elegant types of lamps that you could purchase for your home. The very first Tiffany Bracelets was created in 1895 by Louis Comfort Tiffany. Each lamp that he created was handcrafted and used with special materials and a special process that he created. In this day and age it can be difficult for someone to obtain an original tiffany lamp - which can go for as much as $8,000,000.
Louis Comfort Tiffany Rings was working for an interior design company based in New York where he worked at designing stained glass windows. It was this line of work that gave him the inspiration to create a lamp using these stained glass windows. He created the first Tiffany lamp using extra pieces from the windows that he was making.
Tiffany managed to create several different styles of Tiffany lamps which he separated into seven categories that included; Irregular Upper and Lower Border, Favrile, Geometric,Transition to Flowers, Flowered Cone, and Flowered Globe lamps. Irregular Upper and Lower Border lamps were made with openwork edge that carried a design of a branch, shrubbery, and a tree. The Favrile were all handcrafted Tiffany Pendants and were given his signature 'LCT' intitials. Later in life the initials were replaced by a special symbol.
The geometric lamps were designed using geometric shapes like squares, triangles, ovals, and rectangles. All of the flower categories are given a botanical and nature design through the use of spiders, butterflies, and of course flowers.
Each lamp was created using the copper foil method. In this method a pattern for Tiffany Earrings was drawn on a heavy piece of cardboard. After this a number and a glass color is written on the same pattern piece. Once the pattern is drawn and has been labeled the glass will be laid down over it and will be traced.
After it has been traced onto the glass each piece will be cut and will be ground down into the needed shape. They will then be cleaned to allow the copper foil to be added to the edges. The pieces will be able to adhere to each other once the copper foil solution has been applied. Once the edges are connected they will be soldered to ensure that there is a secure hold.
Tiffany Style Floor Lamps are some of the most commonly sought after Tiffany lamps. Dale Tiffany Floor Lamp makes some of the best recreations based on the original design.
